LEVEL8 Luminous Textured Carry-On Review: Buy the 18-Inch
4.5 / 5
Overall Rating
LEVEL8
LEVEL8 publishes the Luminous 18-inch at 13.7 x 9.2 x 20.2 inches and 7.1 lbs under a column it heads Over Dimension. The 20-inch is over on two axes for US mainline carriers. Plus three places where the product page contradicts itself.

The verdict
- Buy the 18-inch Luminous, not the 20-inch. LEVEL8's own size guide puts the 18'' at 13.7'' L x 9.2'' W x 20.2'' H under a column it heads "Over Dimension" — wheels and handles counted — which is inside the mainline US height and width limits and misses only the 9-inch depth rule. The 20'' is over on two axes. You can see the current Luminous Textured Carry-On price at LEVEL8 for both sizes.
- It is genuinely light for a hard shell. LEVEL8 lists 7.1 lbs for the 18'' and 7.7 lbs for the 20'', which is lighter than most polycarbonate bags in its size class and much lighter than the brand's own aluminum models.
- Do not trust the single spec line at the top of the page. The description block, the size guide and the metric table on this product page disagree with each other on weight and on which sizes exist.
The model exists, and the name is unchanged
We re-checked level8cases.com on 22 September 2026. The Luminous Textured Carry-On 18'' is live at its own product URL and is listed in LEVEL8's carry-on collection. The name has not changed. Two variants are sold: the 18'' at $159.99 and the 20'' at $169.99, both read on the same day.
What LEVEL8 publishes, and where it contradicts itself
The spec line in the description block reads: German-made Makrolon polycarbonate shell, Dimensions 13.7" L x 9.2" W x 20.2" H (35 x 23.5 x 51.5 cm), Weight 7.1 lbs (3.5 kg), Capacity 39 L.
Open the page's "Which size?" guide and a fuller table appears, built by the page's own script from a data block whose column headers LEVEL8 wrote as Size, Capacity, Weight and "Over Dimension". That table lists the 18'' at 39L, 7.1lbs and 13.7'' L x 9.2'' W x 20.2'' H, and the 20'' at 40L, 7.7lbs and 14.5'' L x 9.2'' W x 21.5'' H.
Three inconsistencies are worth knowing about before you shop.
The metric table disagrees with the imperial one. In inches LEVEL8 gives 7.1lbs for the 18'' and 7.7lbs for the 20''. In centimeters it gives 3.5kg for both. Those cannot all be true; 3.5 kg is the 20'' figure.
The capacity ordering is odd. The 18'' is listed at 39L and the 20'' at 40L — a single liter apart despite more than an inch of extra height and width.
The description offers sizes the page does not sell. The bullet list invites you to "Select from 18'', 20'', 24'', or 28'' options", but the variant picker on 22 September 2026 offered only the 18'' and the 20''. The larger sizes appear in the size guide table as reference rows.
Our house rule in these cases is to publish what the page serves at the top, date it, and say plainly that the page disagrees with itself. The same brand's Road Runner hard-shell carry-on is the nearest comparison in the range and a useful check on how LEVEL8 writes a spec panel.
Listed or exterior? This time LEVEL8 tells you
The reason to take the Luminous seriously is that LEVEL8 has labeled the figure. The size-guide column header is "Over Dimension" — overall dimensions, wheels and handles counted. Most brands in this price band publish a single unlabelled number and leave you to guess, which is the entire reason a bag sold as "20-inch" turns up at the gate measuring 21.5 inches. If that distinction is new to you, start with why listed and overall dimensions diverge.
An 18-inch label on a bag that measures 20.2 inches is not a scandal — it is the industry convention. The label describes the case body; the "Over Dimension" figure describes what a sizer sees. What matters is that LEVEL8 published both framings rather than one.
The airline math
United publishes 9 in x 14 in x 22 in and instructs travelers to include the handle and wheels when measuring. Delta publishes 22" x 14" x 9" and says those measurements include any handles or wheels. American publishes 22 x 14 x 9 inches including handles and wheels. JetBlue publishes 22" L x 14" W x 9" H, wheels and handles included, and states it has no carry-on weight restriction at all.
Against those four, the 18'' Luminous is inside the height limit and inside the width limit and 0.2 inches over the depth limit — a near miss on one axis, and the axis a sizer slot is most forgiving about in practice because depth is where a soft-pack bag compresses and a hard shell does not. The 20'' Luminous is over on both width and depth, at 14.5'' and 9.2'' respectively. That is the whole case for buying the smaller one.
Southwest publishes 24" length x 16" width x 10" height, with wheels, handles and attachments counted, and Frontier publishes 24in by 16in by 10in up to 35lb including handles, wheels and straps. Both sizes of Luminous clear both carriers on every axis.
Lufthansa publishes 55 x 40 x 23 cm and a maximum of 8 kg. The 18'' Luminous is 51.5 cm tall and 35 cm wide — inside — but 23.5 cm deep, which is outside. Run your own routes through the carry-on sizer tool and check the numbers against our verified airline limits table before you assume "cabin-friendly" means your cabin.
Weight is where this bag wins
At 7.1 lbs for the 18'', the Luminous is a genuinely light hard shell. Against Lufthansa's 8 kg cabin allowance, 3.5 kg of shell leaves real room for contents, which is not something you can say about an aluminum carry-on. If your constraint is the scale rather than the sizer, that gap decides the purchase — see polycarbonate versus aluminum on the published numbers for the pattern across three brands.
LEVEL8 also lists a TSA-approved combination lock, a three-step aluminum telescopic handle it claims keeps swing under a centimeter, a fully lined interior with a divider and two zip pockets, and four spinner wheels. Whether four wheels or two suits you is a separate argument we work through in two-wheel versus four-wheel spinners.
The warranty, in the brand's own words
The product page shows a "Lifetime Warranty" badge. LEVEL8's warranty page says the company "offer a lifetime warranty that covers any functional damage to the shell, wheels, handles, zippers, or anything else that impairs your use of the luggage." It then excludes damage from "misuse ... neglect, accidents, abrasion, exposure to extreme temperatures, solvents, acids, water, normal wear and tear or transport damage (by airlines for example)."
For a polycarbonate shell that exclusion list lands differently than it does for aluminum. A cracked shell that stops the bag closing is functional damage. The scuffing and scratching a textured polycarbonate surface picks up in a bin is abrasion and normal wear — excluded. The same page also states that "All LEVEL8 bags and accessories (Except LEVEL8 Atlas) are protected by a 1 year warranty", so the lifetime term is for suitcases, not for the brand's backpacks.
Who should buy it
At $159.99 this is a lot of hard shell for the money, and the 18'' size is the sensible pick for anyone flying US mainline carriers who is willing to accept a 0.2-inch depth overhang. If your budget is tighter, our budget weekend carry-on shortlist covers the band below this one, and how much a good carry-on costs puts the Luminous in context. If you would rather have fabric that squeezes than a shell that does not, read hard-side versus soft-side for frequent flyers — and if you want a broader sweep of the market at this price, current carry-on suitcase listings and current hard-side carry-on listings are the quickest way to see it.
FAQ
What size is the LEVEL8 Luminous carry-on?
LEVEL8 sells it in two sizes. The 18'' measures 13.7'' L x 9.2'' W x 20.2'' H and the 20'' measures 14.5'' L x 9.2'' W x 21.5'' H, both listed under a size-guide column LEVEL8 labels Over Dimension, meaning wheels and handles are included, as read in September 2026.
Is the LEVEL8 Luminous carry-on approved for airlines?
No carry-on is "airline approved" as a blanket fact. The 18'' is inside United's, Delta's, American's and JetBlue's published height and width limits and 0.2 inches over their 9-inch depth limit. Both sizes are inside Southwest's and Frontier's larger published boxes. Check your own carrier before you fly.
How much does the LEVEL8 Luminous weigh?
The imperial size guide lists 7.1 lbs for the 18'' and 7.7 lbs for the 20''. The metric version of the same table gives 3.5 kg for both sizes, which is a contradiction on the brand's own page; 3.5 kg corresponds to the 7.7 lbs figure.
What is the LEVEL8 Luminous made of?
LEVEL8 describes the shell as German-made Makrolon polycarbonate with a textured, anti-scratch surface. That is the same shell material the brand lists for its Road Runner carry-on.
