LEVEL8 vs RIMOWA: Two Aluminum Carry-Ons, Neither Fits the US Box
RIMOWA publishes the Original Cabin at 21.7 x 15.8 x 9.1 inch with wheels included; LEVEL8 publishes the Gibraltar at 22 x 15 x 8.4. Both are over the 14-inch US mainline width limit. Only one is built exactly to the European 55 x 40 x 23 cm box.

The verdict
- Neither aluminum cabin bag fits the published US mainline box, so buy on price and route. RIMOWA publishes the Original Cabin at 21.7 x 15.8 x 9.1 inch with wheels and handles included; LEVEL8 publishes the Gibraltar at 22''L x 15''W x 8.4''H. Both are over the 14-inch width United, Delta, American and JetBlue publish. At roughly a third of the price, the LEVEL8 aluminum carry-on range is the cheaper way to be non-compliant in the same way.
- RIMOWA is built to the European box, exactly. The Original Cabin's metric figure is 55 x 40 x 23 cm — the same numbers Lufthansa publishes as its cabin limit. The Gibraltar's 55.8 cm height is over it.
- Both guarantees pay for function, not looks — which is the wrong way round for aluminum. RIMOWA quotes for "non-functional cosmetic wear and tear"; LEVEL8 excludes abrasion and normal wear and tear outright.
The four bags, as published
Read on each brand's own pages on 22 September 2026:
RIMOWA Original Cabin, anodized aluminum, $1,550.00. Measurement 55 x 40 x 23 cm, given in imperial as 21.7 x 15.8 x 9.1 inch. Weight 4.3 kg, given as 9.5 lbs. Volume 35 L. The page states: "Measurements include wheels and handles."
RIMOWA Essential Cabin, polycarbonate, $990.00. Measurement 55 x 39 x 23 cm, also rendered as 21.7 x 15.8 x 9.1 inch. Weight 3.2 kg, given as 7.1 lbs. Volume 36 L. Same wheels-and-handles note.
LEVEL8 Gibraltar Aluminum Carry-On 20'', aluminum magnesium alloy, $459.99. Dimensions 22''L x 15''W x 8.4''H, or 55.8 x 38.1 x 21.3 cm. Net weight 4.5 kg, printed as 10 lbs. Capacity 36 L.
LEVEL8 Captain full aluminum carry-on, $1,099.99. Size 37.4 x 21.5 x 54.1 cm, or 14.7 x 8.5 x 21.3 inch. Weight 4.9 kg, printed as 10.8 lbs. Capacity 37 L.
One brand labels the number; the other mostly does
RIMOWA prints "Measurements include wheels and handles" directly under the size table on both cabin models. That is the single most useful sentence on a luggage spec sheet and most brands omit it. LEVEL8 prints the equivalent label on its Road Runner page and in its Luminous size guide, and prints nothing of the kind on either the Gibraltar page or the Captain page. Both aluminum figures below are therefore read as exterior by inference from the rest of LEVEL8's catalogue, not because the pages say so. Our full Gibraltar review sets out that gap, and why listed and overall dimensions diverge explains why the distinction decides whether a bag boards.
One quirk to note in RIMOWA's favor and against its own imperial table: the Original is 40 cm wide and the Essential 39 cm, yet both render as 15.8 inch. The metric figures are the precise ones. If you are measuring against a European allowance, work in centimeters.
The airline math
All four US mainline carriers converge on the same box. United, Delta, American and JetBlue each publish 22 x 14 x 9 inches with wheels and handles counted, and Delta adds a 45-linear-inch ceiling on top of it. The per-carrier wording, the metric equivalents and the carriers that do not use that box are set out in our per-airline carry-on size table.
Against that:
- RIMOWA Original Cabin is inside on height at 21.7 inch, well over on width at 15.8 inch, and marginally over on depth at 9.1 inch.
- LEVEL8 Gibraltar is at the height limit at 22 inches, over on width at 15 inches, and comfortably inside on depth at 8.4 inches.
- LEVEL8 Captain is inside on height at 21.3 inch and over on width at 14.7 inch.
None of them complies. Southwest publishes 24" x 16" x 10" with wheels, handles and attachments counted, and Frontier publishes 24in by 16in by 10in up to 35lb including handles, wheels and straps. All four bags clear both.
Now the European box. Lufthansa publishes a cabin bag at 55 x 40 x 23 cm and a maximum of 8 kg. The RIMOWA Original Cabin is 55 x 40 x 23 cm — identical on every side, with no margin and no overhang. The Essential is 55 x 39 x 23 cm, a centimeter narrower. The LEVEL8 Gibraltar is 55.8 cm tall, which is over. Put your own carriers into the carry-on sizer tool, and if long-haul is your pattern read how to choose a carry-on for 55 cm limits alongside our verified airline limits table.
Weight and capacity
The aluminum penalty shows up cleanly inside RIMOWA's own line. Original 4.3 kg and 35 L against Essential 3.2 kg and 36 L: the metal shell is heavier and holds less at the same external footprint. LEVEL8's Gibraltar at 4.5 kg and 36 L sits in the same territory; the Captain is heavier again at 4.9 kg for 37 L.
Against Lufthansa's 8 kg cabin allowance, an empty Original eats more than half of it. That is the trade every aluminum buyer makes, and we set it out across three brands in polycarbonate versus aluminum on published numbers.
The guarantees, quoted
RIMOWA states: "All our new suitcases purchased from July 25, 2022 are covered by our Lifetime Guarantee", that the guarantee "covers all functional damage", and that it "is automatically activated upon purchase, so no additional steps are necessary to ensure coverage." Its care page then draws the line: "For any repairs not covered by the guarantee or for any non-functional cosmetic wear and tear that occurs during your travels, our Care Experts will assess repair options and provide an estimate." RIMOWA also runs a RE-CRAFTED program that takes aluminum cases in exchange for a voucher.
LEVEL8 states a "lifetime warranty that covers any functional damage to the shell, wheels, handles, zippers, or anything else that impairs your use of the luggage", and excludes damage from "misuse ... neglect, accidents, abrasion, exposure to extreme temperatures, solvents, acids, water, normal wear and tear or transport damage (by airlines for example)." Its page also says the warranty "applies only to the first purchaser or gift recipient of the Product who has registered their product online", while a later paragraph says official-site purchases activate automatically.
Read side by side, the two promises are closer than the price gap suggests. Both cover function for the life of the suitcase. Neither covers the scuffing and denting that an aluminum shell collects. RIMOWA's advantage is not the wording — it is the store network, the automatic activation, and a repair operation the brand says fixes one suitcase in two on the spot. If warranty strength is what you are shopping for, our Briggs & Riley Baseline review covers the strongest terms published in this category.
Who should buy which
Buy the Gibraltar if you want a metal shell on a budget, fly Southwest or Frontier domestically, and can live with cosmetic marks. Buy the RIMOWA Original Cabin if you fly European carriers where 55 x 40 x 23 cm is the rule, want the case repaired rather than replaced, and treat the price as part of the product. Buy the Essential if you want RIMOWA's service without the weight.
For either, if the bag is expensive enough that a gate-check worries you, shipping the bag ahead removes the sizer from the equation entirely. And to see where these sit against the wider market, current hard-side carry-on listings and our guide to how much a good carry-on costs give the price context. If you want soft-side alternatives instead, start with hard-side versus soft-side for frequent flyers.

FAQ
Is LEVEL8 a good alternative to RIMOWA?
On published specification they are closer than the price gap implies: LEVEL8's Gibraltar is 4.5 kg with 36 L of capacity against RIMOWA's Original Cabin at 4.3 kg and 35 L, and both are over the 14-inch width that US mainline carriers publish. What RIMOWA adds is an exact 55 x 40 x 23 cm European fit, an automatically activated guarantee and a global repair network.
Does a RIMOWA cabin case fit US airline carry-on limits?
Not on width. RIMOWA publishes the Original Cabin at 21.7 x 15.8 x 9.1 inch including wheels and handles. United, Delta, American and JetBlue all publish a 14-inch width limit that counts wheels and handles, so the case is over by more than an inch and a half, as of September 2026.
Does RIMOWA's lifetime guarantee cover dents?
Only if the damage is functional. RIMOWA's guarantee covers all functional damage on suitcases bought from 25 July 2022. Its care page says non-functional cosmetic wear and tear is assessed and quoted for, so a dent that does not stop the case working is a paid repair.
How much does a RIMOWA cabin suitcase weigh?
RIMOWA lists the aluminum Original Cabin at 4.3 kg, shown as 9.5 lbs, and the polycarbonate Essential Cabin at 3.2 kg, shown as 7.1 lbs, both read in September 2026 and both measured with wheels and handles included.
