Best Bags for Frontier's 18 x 14 x 8 Personal Item (2026)
Frontier publishes 18 x 14 x 8 inches including handles, wheels and straps — an exterior limit. Four bags whose own makers publish figures that fit, and five sold as under-seat bags that do not, with the depth measurement that disqualifies them.

The verdict
- The Travelpro Platinum Elite UnderSeat Tote is the pick: it clears Frontier's box on every axis and still holds 22 L. Travelpro publishes it as H: 10.25 in. W: 16.5 in. D: 7.5 in., 2 lbs, and those are the same numbers it lists as case dimensions — nothing hides behind a wheel housing. That 7.5-inch depth is the number that matters, because Frontier's box is 8 inches deep and several of the best-known under-seat totes are 9. You can compare the current Travelpro under-seat range before you buy.
- If you want maximum volume for the money, the Maxlite 5 Soft Tote is 28 L at 1.6 lbs for $90.00 — but it is exactly 8 inches deep, so it passes only while it is not over-stuffed.
- Five bags sold as under-seat or personal-item luggage do not fit, and four of them fail on the same axis. Frontier's 8-inch depth is what eliminates them.
What Frontier actually measures
No spam. Unsubscribe anytime.
Frontier publishes the personal-item allowance on its Bag Options page as 18in by 14in by 8in and up to 35lb including handles, wheels and straps, and repeats it lower on the same page as "Must be equal to or less than 18in by 14in by 8in , including handles, wheels, and straps." Read that clause twice. It is an EXTERIOR limit — the bag plus everything bolted to it — not a listed case size. This is the distinction we explain at length in our guide to listed versus overall carry-on dimensions, and on a budget carrier it is the difference between boarding and paying.
Two more details from the same page. First, the personal item carries a 35 lb weight cap of its own, which almost nothing on this page will trouble. Second: "The size of your personal item will be checked during boarding. Items larger than the allowed dimensions are subject to an additional charge." Frontier says it checks at the gate, and it says a bag that fails costs money.
Spirit Airlines closed on 2 May 2026 — its own statement said "on May 2, 2026, Spirit Airlines started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately" — so Frontier now owns this question outright. Our Frontier personal item size guide and the what fits free after Spirit's shutdown piece cover the fare mechanics. This page is only about bags whose own manufacturer publishes a number that fits.
One useful coincidence: American publishes the same personal-item box — "Dimensions should not exceed 18 x 14 x 8 inches (45 x 35 x 20 cm)" — so a bag bought to Frontier's limit also clears American. It does not automatically clear JetBlue, which publishes "Personal items must not exceed 17" L (43.2 cm) x 13" W (33 cm) x 8" H (20.32 cm)." An 18-inch bag is an inch too long there.
The picks
1. Travelpro Platinum Elite UnderSeat Tote — the one with margin
Travelpro's spec panel reads Overall Dimensions: H: 10.25 in. W: 16.5 in. D: 7.5 in. with case dimensions identical, weight 2 lbs, 22 L, listed at $215.00 on travelpro.com in September 2026. Because Travelpro publishes overall and case figures separately on every product page, and here they are the same number, there is no ambiguity: the tote has no wheels and no telescoping handle to add hidden inches.
Every dimension sits inside 18 x 14 x 8 with something to spare, and the depth — the axis that kills most contenders — sits under the limit rather than level with it. At 22 L it is the smallest-volume Travelpro here, which is the trade. If you want a soft bag that will not be argued about at a Frontier gate, this is it.
2. Travelpro Maxlite 5 Soft Tote — most liters per dollar, zero depth margin
Travelpro publishes Overall Dimensions: H: 11 in. W: 16 in. D: 8 in., again identical to the case dimensions, weight 1.6 lbs, 28 L, $90.00 in September 2026. The page's own FAQ adds: "That is the full exterior size, so you can compare it directly against airline or storage limits."
More volume than the Platinum Elite tote for less than half the money. The catch is arithmetic: 8 inches deep against an 8-inch limit is zero tolerance. A soft-sided tote filled to its seams bulges, and a sizer box does not. Pack it with room to spare and it is the value pick on this page; pack it like a duffel and you are relying on a gate agent not to care.
3. Monos Metro Backpack — the one that clears on every axis
Monos publishes the Metro Backpack at 16.5" height, 11.2" width, 6" depth, 2.68 lb / 1.21 kg in nylon, 14 L, listed at $182.75 in September 2026. Every number is inside Frontier's box with room, and 6 inches of depth means it still fits after you stuff a fleece in the front pocket.
Two honest caveats. 14 L is genuinely small — this is a one-night bag or a laptop commuter, not a week of clothes. And unlike the Monos Carry-On page, which states "Measurements include wheels and fixed handles," the Metro page publishes its table with no such note, so we are reading it as exterior because a backpack has no wheels or telescoping handle to exclude, not because Monos labelled it. Monos is not a partner of ours and there is no link on that name; we are naming it because it is the only non-Travelpro bag we could verify today.
4. Travelpro Roundtrip UnderSeat Soft Tote — the maximum-size gamble
Overall Dimensions: H: 11 in. W: 18 in. D: 8 in., 1.7 lbs, 28 L, $95.00 in September 2026. Eighteen inches against an 18-inch limit and 8 inches against an 8-inch limit: it fits on paper and has nothing left on two of three axes. Include it if you want the largest legal footprint and you pack disciplined. Skip it if you have ever been asked to put a bag in a sizer.
What did not fit, and why
This is the more useful half of the page. All are sold as under-seat or personal-item bags, and all are published by their makers at numbers that exceed Frontier's box:
- Travelpro Crew Classic UnderSeat Tote — overall 10 x 16.25 x 9 in, 1.6 lbs, 25 L. Nine inches deep against an 8-inch limit.
- Travelpro VersaPack+ UnderSeat Tote — the same overall 10 x 16.25 x 9 in, 1.6 lbs, 25 L. Same failure.
- Travelpro Maxlite Laptop Backpack — Overall 18 x 15 x 10 in against case dimensions of 18 x 15 x 9 in. Too wide and too deep, and note the page's own one-inch gap between overall and case depth.
- Travelpro Maxlite 5 Rolling Underseat Carry-On — case 15.25 x 13 x 8 in, but overall 17.5 x 14.5 x 8.5 in including wheels and handle. The case figure fits Frontier; the exterior figure does not. This single bag is the entire argument of this site in one product.
- LEVEL8 Atlas Laptop Backpack — 12.6"L x 6.5"W x 18.6"H, 31 L, 3.33 lbs, published under a bare "Size:" heading that LEVEL8 labels neither listed nor exterior. Taller than the 18-inch limit on its longest side.
There is a LEVEL8 backpack that does fit on paper — the Atlas Pro at an equally unlabelled "Size: 18in x 13in x 7in", 25 Liters, 2.2 pounds — but on 22 September 2026 its product page showed no purchasable variants, so it is not a pick. For the hard-shell side of that brand, our LEVEL8 Road Runner review covers the carry-on, not the personal item.
How to check any other bag yourself
Three steps, in order.
One: find the exterior number, not the listed one. If a brand publishes only one set of dimensions and does not say whether wheels and handles are in it, treat it as a case figure and assume the real bag is bigger. Travelpro publishes both, which is why three of the four picks here are Travelpro; that is a sourcing outcome, not a preference.
Two: check depth first. Frontier's 8-inch depth, not its 18-inch length, is what disqualifies bags. Our under-seat personal item backpack roundup and the United personal item breakdown show how differently carriers shape the same volume.
Three: run it through the tool. Our airline sizer holds each carrier's published box so you can compare a bag against several at once, and the carry-on size limits by airline table shows the full set with dates.
If none of this works — you are travelling with more than a personal item and Frontier's bundle pricing is worse than the alternative — shipping is the other exit. Luggage Forward states "it is guaranteed to arrive on time or we'll refund you double what you paid to ship the bag," which is a stronger promise than any luggage warranty on the market; you can get a luggage shipping quote and compare it against a bundle. And if you would rather just browse, here are current prices on personal-item bags and on bags sold for budget-airline limits.

FAQ
What size is a Frontier personal item?
Frontier publishes 18 by 14 by 8 inches and up to 35 pounds, including handles, wheels and straps, on its Bag Options page as read in September 2026. The limit is an exterior measurement, so anything attached to the bag counts.
Does a 9-inch deep underseat bag fit Frontier?
No. Frontier's published depth is 8 inches including handles and straps, so a bag its own maker lists at 9 inches deep exceeds the allowance by an inch on that axis alone. Several popular under-seat totes are exactly 9 inches deep.
Is the Frontier personal item the same as American's?
The published boxes match. American lists 18 by 14 by 8 inches for a personal item and Frontier lists 18 by 14 by 8 inches including handles, wheels and straps, both read in September 2026. JetBlue is smaller at 17 by 13 by 8 inches, so a bag sized to Frontier may be an inch too long there.
What happens if my personal item is too big at the gate?
Frontier states the size of your personal item will be checked during boarding and that items larger than the allowed dimensions are subject to an additional charge. The carrier does not publish a single flat figure for that charge on the Bag Options page; it directs travellers to its Bag Price Checker instead.
