Carry-On Weight Limits on International Airlines, Read in September 2026

8 min readBy Carry-On Sized Editorial
Last updated:Published:

Lufthansa publishes 8 kg, Iberia 10 kg and easyJet 15kg, each read on the carrier's own page on 22 September 2026. British Airways would not serve us a readable page, so no BA cabin weight appears here. Most US carriers publish no cabin weight at all.

The verdict

  1. The weight cap, not the size box, is what strands American travellers in Europe. Lufthansa's Economy column is headed "1 item of carry-on baggage" and the cell under it reads "max. 8 kg max. 55 x 40 x 23 cm". Your empty suitcase is already spending part of that: LEVEL8 publishes its Voyageur Carry-On 20'' at "8.1lbs (3.7kg)" before anything goes in. Buy the empty weight first. Compare a maker's published empty weights in both units rather than guessing.
  2. The numbers are published in kilograms, and we do not convert them. Lufthansa says 8 kg. Iberia says 10 kg. easyJet says 15kg. None of those three pages prints a pound equivalent, so neither will we; a conversion you invent at the check-in desk is how a bag ends up in the hold.
  3. We are not publishing a British Airways cabin weight, and you should treat any site that does with suspicion today. We requested britishairways.com's baggage page on 22 September 2026 and the server returned a placeholder document titled "British Airways - Information Page" carrying a noindex tag; a second request through a full browser returned an error page reading "An error (502 Bad Gateway) has occurred in response to this request." Check britishairways.com yourself before you pack to a weight.

The shape of that table is the story. The US carriers regulate volume and largely ignore mass; the European carriers regulate both. JetBlue states its position outright: "JetBlue lets you bring one carry-on and one personal item on all fares, with no weight limit as long as you can lift it." Frontier is the US exception, publishing "24in by 16in by 10in and up to 35lb including handles, wheels and straps".

Lufthansa: the tightest number on the list

Lufthansa's allowance table gives the same pair of figures in every cabin — Economy, Premium Economy, Business and First all show "max. 8 kg max. 55 x 40 x 23 cm" — with the higher cabins differing only in the count: "1 item of carry-on baggage" in Economy, "2 items of carry-on baggage" in Business and First. Every cabin also gets "1 personal item max. 40 x 30 x 15 cm".

Two things on that page deserve your attention more than the number does.

First, Lufthansa says it checks: "This is why we check the amount, weight and dimensions of your carry-on baggage at the airport." Not "may check". And it closes a loophole travellers rely on elsewhere: "Please note that any piece of baggage brought to the gate counts as carry-on baggage."

Second, the price of being wrong is published, and it is not a normal bag fee: "The fees for this are significantly higher than for checked baggage booked in advance and can only be paid by credit card. The fees depend on the route and range from EUR 60 / CHF 60 / USD 75 to EUR 110 / CHF 110 / USD 125."

What the page does not do is tell you how to measure. Nowhere in the carry-on document does Lufthansa say whether 55 x 40 x 23 cm includes wheels and handles — a silence it shares with Iberia and does not share with easyJet. Since nearly every hard-shell maker publishes an overall figure larger than its case figure, that silence is worth a tape measure. It is the whole subject of listed versus overall carry-on dimensions.

Iberia and easyJet: 10 kg and 15kg, written differently

Iberia: "You can carry baggage up to 10 kg (one or two items of up to 14 kg in Business Class, depending on the flight time) with maximum dimensions of 56 x 40 x 25 cm." The page repeats the pairing in its own table — "The bag weighing up to 10 kg (56 x 40 x 25 cm) must be stored in the overhead compartment of the aircraft" — and adds the under-seat item: "Additionally, you are permitted one personal carry-on luggage item (such as a backpack or handbag) measuring up to 30 x 40 x 15 cm."

Iberia also states the consequence in the same breath as the rule: "If it exceeds the weight or size limits, you must check it in at the check-in desk before going through the security control, with a checked baggage fee applied according to your fare." Before security is the operative phrase — there is no gate-side rescue.

easyJet is the outlier in the best way: it publishes the same weight for both tiers and says how to measure. Free bag: "Maximum size 45 x 36 x 20cm (including any handles and wheels)", "Maximum weight 15kg. You need to be able to lift and carry the bag yourself". Large bag: "Maximum size 56 x 45 x 25 cm (including any handles and wheels)", same weight. And it tells you it enforces: "We check cabin bag sizes before you board." Our deep read on that carrier is in Ryanair and easyJet cabin sizes for US travellers.

British Airways and Ryanair: what we will not print

British Airways. We attempted britishairways.com's baggage page twice on 22 September 2026. A plain request returned a short placeholder titled "British Airways - Information Page" and marked noindex; a request through a full browser returned an error document reading "An error (502 Bad Gateway) has occurred in response to this request." We therefore cannot verify a British Airways cabin weight today, and this page publishes none. That is a statement about our evidence, not a claim that the airline has no limit — go to britishairways.com and read the cabin block yourself.

Ryanair. We requested Ryanair's cabin-bag page and the server answered with a document whose only readable content was "We're sorry! This page is off sightseeing. Why don't you do the same?" A second request to its help-centre article returned a page titled "The page you were looking for doesn't exist – Ryanair Help Centre". No Ryanair figure appears here. Our airline sizer carries a Ryanair row deliberately stamped with an older check date; treat it as a prior reading, not a current one.

Buying to a weight limit

The arithmetic is unforgiving and it is done before you pack. Travelpro publishes its Maxlite 5 Carry-On Spinner at "Weight: 5.4 lbs." with "Volume: 46 L", listed at $160.00 as of September 2026 — one of the lighter full-size carry-ons any brand publishes, and Travelpro prints both a case and an overall number on every model page. LEVEL8's Voyageur Carry-On 20'' is published at "8.1lbs (3.7kg)" with a "Capacity: 43L" and "Dimensions(including handle & wheels): 15.1''L x 9.8''W x 21.3''H".

Both of those bags will physically hold more than 8 kg of clothing. On Lufthansa, only one of them leaves you much room to do it. The shortlist of everything under seven pounds is in the lightest carry-ons guide, and how to choose a carry-on for 55cm limits covers the size half of the same problem. For the full per-airline set, use the verified size table.

If your trip genuinely needs more than 8 kg in the cabin, stop fighting it: get a luggage shipping quote or compare bag-shipping prices and put the number next to a hold fee paid at the gate in euros.

FAQ

What is the carry-on weight limit for international flights?

There is no single limit; it is set by the operating carrier. As of September 2026 Lufthansa publishes eight kilograms, Iberia publishes ten kilograms with fourteen in Business Class, and easyJet publishes fifteen kilograms for both its free under-seat bag and its paid large cabin bag. Several US carriers publish no cabin weight at all.

Does Lufthansa weigh carry-on bags?

Lufthansa's own page says it checks the amount, weight and dimensions of carry-on baggage at the airport, and that anything brought to the gate counts as carry-on baggage. It also publishes the penalty: hold transport paid by credit card, at fees it describes as significantly higher than checked baggage booked in advance.

What is the British Airways hand baggage weight limit?

We could not verify one. On 22 September 2026 the British Airways baggage page returned an empty placeholder to a plain request and a 502 Bad Gateway error page through a browser, so no figure is published here. Check britishairways.com directly, and be wary of any third-party table quoting a British Airways cabin weight without a read date.

Do airlines include wheels and handles in the cabin bag measurement?

Some say so and some do not. easyJet and Frontier state it explicitly in the limit itself. Lufthansa and Iberia publish their dimensions with no measuring instruction at all. Where the page is silent, measure the outside of the bag including wheels and the retracted handle, because that is what a gate template constrains.
