The Lightest Carry-Ons Under 7 lb, and What a 10 kg Cabin Limit Costs

8 min readBy Carry-On Sized Editorial

Four carry-ons whose own makers publish an empty weight under 7 lb, checked against Iberia's 10 kg cabin cap and easyJet's 15 kg. Retailer weights excluded. One pick's page states two different weights; we print the spec-panel figure and say so.

The verdict

  1. The Travelpro Maxlite 5 Compact Carry-On Spinner is the lightest bag we could verify that still fits a mainline sizer on its EXTERIOR number: 5.1 lbs, overall 22 x 14 x 9 in including wheels and carry handles. Travelpro publishes both the case figure and the overall figure on the same page, which is why we can say that about it and not about most of the market — compare the current Travelpro carry-on range.
  2. If you want liters instead, the 21-inch Maxlite 5 Carry-On Spinner is 5.4 lbs and 46 L — but its overall size is 23 x 14.5 x 9 in. It is lighter per liter and larger than the published limit at the same time. Both things are true and only one of them gets checked at the gate.
  3. On a 10 kg cabin cap, empty weight is not a nicety. Iberia's published cabin allowance is 10 kg. A 5.1 lb shell and a 9.5 lb shell do not start that flight in the same place.

The rule for this page

A bag qualifies here only if the brand's own specification page publishes an empty weight. A weight that appears only in a retailer listing does not count, because retailer listings routinely carry a shipping weight — box, padding and all — and because nobody at the retailer is accountable for the number. Everything below was read on the manufacturer's site on 22 September 2026.

The second rule is the one this site exists for. Weight and size are published to different standards: a brand will give you one empty weight and then quietly give you two different dimension sets. We always say whether a dimension is LISTED (the packing case only) or EXTERIOR (wheels and handles included), and the gap between them is covered in our piece on listed versus overall carry-on dimensions.

What a 10 kg limit actually costs

US domestic carriers mostly do not weigh cabin bags. Once you leave that world, they do.

Iberia publishes a 10 kg cabin allowance — "You can carry baggage up to 10 kg (one or two items of up to 14 kg in Business Class , depending on the flight time) with maximum dimensions of 56 x 40 x 25 cm" — plus a personal item of 30 x 40 x 15 cm under the seat. easyJet caps both its bags at 15kg, small and large alike. Frontier caps the carry-on at 35lb including handles, wheels and straps.

Now put a bag inside those numbers. A 10 kg cap is about twenty-two pounds. A carry-on that weighs 5.1 lbs empty and one that weighs 9.5 lbs empty are competing for the same allowance, and the heavier shell has spent nearly twice as much of it on itself. For the size half of the same problem, our international carry-on guide and the verified airline size table do the dimensions.

One caveat worth printing: Iberia's page states the 56 x 40 x 25 cm figure without saying whether wheels and handles are inside it. Several US carriers say so explicitly. Iberia does not, so treat it as the stricter reading.

The picks

1. Travelpro Maxlite 5 Compact Carry-On Spinner — 5.1 lbs, and it fits

Travelpro publishes Weight: 5.1 lbs, Overall Dimensions (includes wheels and carry handles): H: 22 in. W: 14 in. D: 9 in., case dimensions of H: 19.5 in. W: 13.75 in. D: 9 in., 38 L, at $160.00 in September 2026. The page states it plainly: "When airlines publish size limits they mean the overall size, so compare the overall number to your airline's limit."

That is the whole pick. It is the lightest spinner on this page and the only one whose exterior number equals the mainline box rather than exceeding it. The price of that is volume — 38 L is the smallest here — and a shorter case that fits fewer full-length garments unfolded.

2. Travelpro Maxlite 5 Carry-On Spinner (21 inch) — 5.4 lbs, 46 L, and 23 inches tall

Same collection, three-tenths of a pound heavier, eight more liters: Weight: 5.4 lbs, 46 L, $160.00, case H: 21 in. W: 14 in. D: 9 in. — and overall H: 23 in. W: 14.5 in. D: 9 in. That overall figure is taller and wider than the 22 x 14 x 9 that American, Delta, JetBlue and Alaska all publish.

Travelpro is not hiding this. The page claims the bag accommodates overhead bin space on most major US airlines, then adds in the same breath: "Fully expanded Carry-On may not meet airline restrictions." A bin and a sizer are not the same test, which is the subject of our piece on what a gate sizer actually constrains. The two-wheeled sibling, the Maxlite 5 Carry-On Rollaboard, is the same 5.4 lbs with the same overall figure and 52 L — the most volume per pound anywhere on this page, because you are not carrying four spinner wheels. Our two-wheel versus four-wheel comparison covers that trade.

3. Travelpro Maxlite Air V2 Compact Carry-On Hardside Spinner — 6.4 lbs of hard shell that fits

The lightest hard-shell carry-on we could verify at a published empty weight under 7 lb: Weight: 6.4 lbs, Volume: 40 L, overall H: 22 in. W: 14 in. D: 9 in. including wheels and carry handles, case 18.75 x 13.25 x 9 in, $160.00 in September 2026.

One honesty note, because it matters more than the bag. The same page states two different weights. The Dimensions panel says 6.4 lbs; a size-comparison module further up the page lists the Compact at 6.1 lbs and 40 L. We publish the figure from the specification panel and record the disagreement rather than picking the flattering one. If you want hard-shell for its own sake, the hard-side versus soft-side comparison is the better starting point, and you can also scan current prices on hardside carry-ons.

4. Monos Carry-On — 6.60 lb, and the clearest measurement statement on the market

Monos publishes Weight: 6.60 lb / 2.99 kg, Volume: 39.9 L, and an exterior table reading 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches (55.88 x 35.56 x 22.86 cm), listed at $233.75 against a compare-at price of $275.00 in September 2026.

Underneath that table is the sentence we wish every brand printed: "Measurements include wheels and fixed handles." Read the word fixed. The telescoping handle is not fixed, so the claim covers the wheels and the grab handles and stops there. It is still the most precise dimension statement in this roundup, and Monos goes further than most in claiming the bag "will fit in the baggage sizer and overhead bins of all major airlines in North America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania." Monos runs no affiliate programme we belong to, so that name is plain text; we are including it because it earned the slot on published numbers.

What did not qualify

  • Away Carry-On — 7.5 lbs at an exterior 22" x 14.4" x 9.1", with "Measurements include handles and wheels." Half a pound over the bar, and 14.4 inches wide against a 14-inch published limit.
  • LEVEL8's current in-stock hard shells — the Polaris Carry-On is 8.1lbs (3.7kg) at 14.5''L9''W21.6H including handle and wheels; the Voyageur Carry-On is also 8.1lbs (3.7kg) at 15.1''L x 9.8''W x 21.3''H; the Adventure 20'' is 9 lbs at 21.3''H x 15.4''W x 10.2''D — LEVEL8 labels all three of those dimension lines as including handle and wheels — and the Road Runner is 9.5lbs (4.3kg). None clears 7 lb. If the shell matters more than the pound, see the current LEVEL8 carry-on range and read our Road Runner review first.
  • LEVEL8 Vintage Carry-On — 6.8 lbs at an Overall Dimension of 21.3”H x 14.3”L x 8.6”W and 38 L. It would have qualified on weight, but on 22 September 2026 its product page offered no purchasable variant, so it is not a pick.

If your real problem is that nothing light enough exists for the trip you are taking, the other answer is to stop carrying it. Luggage Forward's own page states the shipment "is guaranteed to arrive on time or we'll refund you double what you paid to ship the bag" — you can get a luggage shipping quote and weigh it against a bag fee. Otherwise, browse current carry-on prices and our cost guide for what a given budget buys, and run any candidate through the airline sizer before you spend.

FAQ

What is the lightest carry-on suitcase?

Among bags whose makers publish an empty weight on their own specification page, the lightest we verified in September 2026 was the Travelpro Maxlite 5 Compact Carry-On Spinner at 5.1 pounds. Lighter figures circulate on retailer listings, but those are frequently shipping weights rather than the weight of the bag.

How heavy is a 10 kg cabin bag allowance in pounds?

Ten kilograms is a little over twenty-two pounds. Iberia publishes a 10 kg cabin allowance with maximum dimensions of 56 by 40 by 25 centimeters, read in September 2026. easyJet instead caps both its small and large cabin bags at 15 kilograms.

Does the published weight include the packing cubes and laundry bag?

Not usually, and brands rarely say. Away, Monos and Travelpro all publish a single empty weight with no statement about included accessories, so treat the number as the bare bag and add anything that ships inside it yourself.

Is a lighter suitcase less durable?

No brand publishes comparative impact data that would answer this, so anyone telling you the answer is guessing. What the warranties do tell you is that every one of them pays out on function rather than appearance, which means a scuffed light bag and a scuffed heavy bag are treated identically.
