The verdict
- The two bags have the same packing case and the same published volume. Travelpro lists both the Maxlite 5 Carry-On Spinner and the Platinum Elite Carry-On Spinner at "Case Dimensions: H: 21 in. W: 14 in. D: 9 in." and "Volume: 46 L", read on travelpro.com on 22 September 2026. The Maxlite 5 is listed at $160.00, the Platinum Elite at $390.00. If the volume is what you are buying, compare the two spec panels on Travelpro's own pages before the price talks you into the heavier one.
- The warranty summary on the two collection pages is word for word identical. Both the Maxlite 5 Warranty page and the Platinum Elite Softside Warranty page open with the same sentence about Limited Lifetime Coverage and the same Trusted Companion Promise. The premium does not buy a longer guarantee.
- What the premium does buy is mass, and mass is the wrong direction. Travelpro publishes the Maxlite 5 at "Weight: 5.4 lbs." and the Platinum Elite at "Weight: 7.8 lbs." for the same 46 L of packing space.

Travelpro is unusually good about the distinction this site exists to police. Its own product FAQ states it plainly: "We publish both numbers. The case dimensions (the packing body only) are 21 x 14 x 9 in. The overall dimensions, which include wheels and carry handles, are 23 x 14.5 x 9 in. When airlines publish carry-on size limits, they mean the overall size, wheels and handles included, so compare the overall number to your airline's limit." That is the correct instruction, and it is the one most buyers ignore. We unpack why it matters in listed versus overall carry-on dimensions.
Both bags are over the published box, and Travelpro says so
American publishes its carry-on limit as "Cannot exceed 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm) including handles and wheels". Put that against the overall column above: the Maxlite 5 is listed at 23 in. of overall height, the Platinum Elite at 23.5 in. Neither bag is inside the published US mainline box once wheels and handles are counted — which is exactly what the airline counts.
Travelpro does not hide from this. Its Maxlite 5 page states: "Its 23 in. overall height is marginally above the commonly published 22 x 14 x 9 in. standard, typical of nearly all premium carry-ons, and it fits the sizers that airlines actually use." Both pages also carry the same warning about expansion: "This Carry-on bag has been sizer bin tested to accommodate overhead bin space on most major US airlines. Fully expanded Carry-On may not meet airline restrictions."
Read that second sentence twice before you use the expansion zip on the way home. If you want to check your own bag against a specific carrier's numbers, the airline sizer holds the boxes, and what a gate sizer actually constrains explains why the metal template outranks the web page.
The warranty is not the differentiator
This is where the comparison usually gets decided, and where the published evidence goes against the expensive bag.
Travelpro's Maxlite 5 Warranty page and its Platinum Elite Softside Warranty page both open with this, identically: "Limited Lifetime Coverage: Wheels, Zippers, Extension Handle, Carrying Handles, with repair or replacement at Travelpro's discretion. Trusted Companion Promise: Valid for the period the product is owned by original purchaser or gift recipient. Covers shipping cost if product needs to be shipped to Travelpro's repair facilities. Covers the cost of repair for damage caused by an airline or other common carrier. Additional coverage available if registered within 120 days of delivery date or gift receipt."
Not paraphrased — the same string on both pages, read the same day. Both product pages add the same trial: the Maxlite 5 page says its collection coverage comes "plus the 100-day satisfaction trial with free returns", and the Platinum Elite page says "plus a 100-day satisfaction trial with free returns."
That matters because Travelpro's warranties are genuinely not uniform across collections. Its VersaPack+ Warranty page, read the same day, time-limits the enhancement in a way neither of these two does: "If you register this VersaPack® + Collection product with Travelpro within 120 days of delivery date (or original date of gift receipt), we will enhance the first three years (3 years) of your Limited Warranty". No equivalent cap appears on the Maxlite 5 or Platinum Elite pages. See Platinum Elite versus Crew VersaPack+ for that comparison. Against the Maxlite 5, though, the Platinum Elite has no warranty advantage on the published text. Our warranty comparison across brands puts both next to the lifetime guarantees other makers publish.
Where the weight actually costs you
Travelpro publishes both bags in pounds only. Lufthansa, the carrier most likely to stop a heavy cabin bag, publishes its cap in kilograms only: its Economy column is headed "1 item of carry-on baggage" and the cell beneath reads "max. 8 kg max. 55 x 40 x 23 cm". We do not convert between the two units here, because neither company published a conversion and a fabricated one is how a reader ends up at a scale being wrong by a rounding error.
What we will say is directional and safe: the empty weight of the bag is subtracted from your allowance before you pack a sock, and of these two bags Travelpro publishes the Platinum Elite as the heavier one by a clear margin at identical volume. On a carrier that weighs, the cheaper bag is the one that lets you carry more. The full picture of which carriers weigh is in our international cabin weight limits table, and the lightest published options are in the under-7-lb shortlist.
A caution about trusting any single spec panel
While checking these pages we found Travelpro contradicting itself on a third model. The Maxlite Air V2 Compact Carry-On Hardside Spinner page prints, in its Dimensions specification panel, "Overall Dimensions (includes wheels and carry handles): H: 22 in. W: 14 in. D: 9 in. Case Dimensions: H: 18.75 in. W: 13.25 in. D: 9 in. Weight: 6.4 lbs. Volume: 40 L". Higher on the very same page, a size-comparison module prints that model's column as 22 x 14 x 9 in with "Weight: 6.1 lbs. Volume: 40 L".
Same URL, same day, two empty weights. We publish 6.4 lbs, the figure in the product's own Dimensions specification panel, read on 22 September 2026, and we are telling you about the other one rather than quietly picking a side. A brand spec page is still the best source available for luggage — better than any retailer listing — but "best available" is not the same as "internally consistent", which is why our hard-side versus soft-side comparison leans on published numbers and says when they wobble.
Which one to buy
Buy the Maxlite 5 if the bag is a tool. Same case, same 46 L, lighter, and the warranty text is identical. It is the obvious pick for anyone flying carriers that weigh the cabin bag, anyone who lifts the bag overhead themselves, and anyone who would rather spend the difference on the trip.
Buy the Platinum Elite if you want the heavier build and the features that come with it and you fly US domestic routes where nothing is weighed. It is a nicer object. It is not, on Travelpro's published specifications, a bigger or a better-guaranteed one. If you want the hard-shell alternative at that price point instead, compare a hard-shell maker's published dimensions or browse current carry-on prices.
And if the trip is one where neither bag is going to clear the gate, price a luggage shipping quote against the fee before you gamble on the sizer.

FAQ
Is Travelpro Platinum Elite worth the extra money over Maxlite 5?
Not on the published specifications. Travelpro lists both carry-on spinners with the same case dimensions of 21 by 14 by 9 inches and the same 46 liter volume, and the warranty summary on the two collection pages is word for word identical as of September 2026. What the Platinum Elite adds is build and weight, not space or coverage.
What is the difference between Maxlite 5 and Platinum Elite?
Weight, overall height and price. Travelpro publishes the Maxlite 5 carry-on spinner at 5.4 pounds and an overall height of 23 inches, and the Platinum Elite carry-on spinner at 7.8 pounds and an overall height of 23.5 inches, listed at 160 and 390 dollars respectively in September 2026.
Does the Travelpro Maxlite 5 fit airline size limits?
Its packing case does, but its overall size is over the common 22 by 14 by 9 inch box once wheels and handles are counted. Travelpro says so on its own page, describing the 23 inch overall height as marginally above the commonly published standard and noting that a fully expanded bag may not meet airline restrictions.
How long is the Travelpro warranty on Maxlite 5?
Travelpro's Maxlite 5 Warranty page states Limited Lifetime Coverage on wheels, zippers, extension handle and carrying handles, with repair or replacement at Travelpro's discretion, plus a Trusted Companion Promise valid for the period the product is owned by the original purchaser or gift recipient. Additional coverage is available if you register within 120 days of delivery.
